Concerns about the recent announcement that operations at the Uranium Mill Tailings Remedial Action project site along the Colorado River north of town would be reduced to nine months per year stirred a lively discussion during Tuesday’s Moab Tailings Project Steering Committee Meeting.
Mines from as far back as the 1890s are being cleaned up for tailings in the Red River area. Cleanup projects to the Red River Mining district that were implemented in 2005 are nearing completion.
The first big dollars are starting to flow out of a $460 million trust fund established to pay for cleanup of mining pollution in Idaho’s Silver Valley. About $8.5 million will be spent this year from the Asarco trust, which was created as part of the company’s 2009 bankruptcy settlement to pay for environmental liabilities in the valley.
